Summary: Ichigo Kurosaki is an aggressive, troubling teenager and he possesses an exceptional ability to see spirits. The story begins with a stranger appearing in Ichigo's bedroom. This stranger is the Shinigami (the god of death) Rukia Kuchiki, amazed by Ichigo being able to see her. Their conversation interrupted by a demon attacking Ichigo's home. After being severely injured by having to protect Ichigo, she decides to pass half of her powers of death to Ichigo so that Ichigo will destroy the demon. But Ichigo accidentally drains all of her energy, helping him destroy that demon with ease. The next day, Rukia appeared in Ichigo's classroom as a transfer student. Even more surprised when he learned that Rukia is now a normal person. She hypothesized that it was Ichigo's strange power that drained her of all her powers, causing her to be trapped in the human world, unable to return to the Underworld. Rukia had transferred her soul into a gigai - an artificial body - while restoring her energy. During this time, she had to transfer her work to Ichigo, destroy the demons and send lost souls to the Underworld.
